Recently Yahoo has struggled to remain one of the top competitors when it comes to providing tools and software for the internet. Part of Yahoo’s problems is that the company has flip-flopped in recent years between focusing their efforts on technical components, or media components. This back and forth has finally come to an end though, as Microsoft has sold most of their media related products to Microsoft, and have re-dedicated themselves to focusing on the technical side of their business.
And while it seems that they are being taken over by Microsoft, executives at Yahoo have stated that they still tend to maintain their foothold in the search engine market. But is the best truly yet to come for Yahoo?
Yahoo is now competing with the Google search engine, and Microsoft’s Bing search engine to be the most popular search engine. To do this Yahoo is going to completely change the way their search engine works, which they hope will allow them to provide the most relevant results of all of the search engines. In addition to these major changes to their search engine, Yahoo is also working on developing new and innovative tools that will provide functionality for users that they have never seen before.
Their strategy is to offer a long tail of relevant content for each search using classifications of places, people, and products to help draw in only relevant search results, something that Bing has become more successful at than even super giant Google. Yahoo feels that they can corner the market if they can further narrow down search results to relevant content.
The question for Yahoo now is how quickly they can develop and implement these changes, and if they will be able to bring users back into the fold once this improved search engine is released. Yahoo believes that this effort will be a success, and that the company will return to its former prominence, but only time will tell.
